Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge sits deep inside the privately owned Sabi Sand Game Reserve in Mpumalanga, on an unfenced boundary that lets Big Five wildlife move freely between the reserve and adjoining Kruger National Park; guests typically transfer in on a light aircraft to a private airstrip followed by a game-drive vehicle. The lodge, designed by architect Andrew Makin, is sculpted directly into a hillside and roofed with grass and reeds so the building reads as an extension of the landscape rather than a structure imposed on it, with curved passages and organic forms throughout the public areas. Thirteen suites are arranged along the slope, each with a private viewing deck over the bush, indoor and outdoor showers, and several with their own plunge pools for cooling off between drives. Dining runs on a boma and wine-cellar circuit, with candlelit bush dinners, a formal indoor dining room, and a wine cellar built into the rock that stocks an extensive South African list. A spa wing and a small gym sit alongside a free-form pool that overlooks a waterhole frequented by elephant and antelope. Service follows the all-inclusive safari model, with a dedicated ranger and tracker team running twice-daily game drives and walking safaris, making the lodge suited to honeymooners and serious wildlife travellers rather than families with young children.
