Ellerman House

Ellerman House occupies an Edwardian mansion built in 1912 on the cliffs of Bantry Bay, a short drive from Cape Town's V&A Waterfront and the base of Lion's Head, with the Atlantic Ocean visible from most of the property. The original house has been extended with a contemporary villa wing, creating a mix of historic and modern architecture set into terraced gardens above the sea. With only 13 rooms and suites across the two buildings, the hotel operates more like a private residence than a conventional hotel, and each room is individually decorated, several with private plunge pools or terraces overlooking the ocean. The house holds one of South Africa's most significant private art collections, with works by Irma Stern and other notable South African artists displayed throughout the public rooms and corridors, alongside a dedicated wine gallery stocked with rare Cape vintages. Dining is by private chef rather than a fixed restaurant menu, with meals prepared to order and served in the dining room, on the terrace, or in-room. The infinity pool cantilevers over the rocks toward the Atlantic, and a small spa offers treatments in a garden setting; there is no separate gym, though yoga and personal training can be arranged. Service is built around a high staff-to-guest ratio, with a dedicated host assigned to each guest for the length of their stay, arranging everything from restaurant bookings to private tours of the Cape Peninsula. The intimate scale and Bantry Bay setting make it suited to travelers seeking a residential, highly personalized alternative to larger five-star hotels.
