Central Slovenia (Osrednjeslovenska) is the small but dynamic region around Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, where a car-free medieval and Art Nouveau city meets alpine foothills, marshland and castle-topped hills. Within an hour of the capital are the Kamnik Alps and Velika Planina herder settlement, the Ljubljana Marshes, the Sava river valley and the flower-filled Volčji Potok Arboretum. The region combines easy public transport, a relaxed café culture and a strong farm-to-table food scene.
Central Slovenia has a temperate continental climate with Alpine and sub-Mediterranean influences. Ljubljana sits in a basin that traps cold air and fog in winter (January averages about 0 C) and warms to hot, humid summers (July highs near 27 C). Rain falls year-round, about 1,400 mm annually, with the heaviest falls in autumn and early summer thunderstorms. Hills and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps to the north are cooler, with snow from December to March above 1,000 m. Monthly figures below are approximate long-term averages for Ljubljana.
