Central Slovenia (Osrednjeslovenska) is the small but dynamic region around Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, where a car-free medieval and Art Nouveau city meets alpine foothills, marshland and castle-topped hills. Within an hour of the capital are the Kamnik Alps and Velika Planina herder settlement, the Ljubljana Marshes, the Sava river valley and the flower-filled Volčji Potok Arboretum. The region combines easy public transport, a relaxed café culture and a strong farm-to-table food scene.

Transportation details
Full breakdown of how to get around.
Central Slovenia is compact: Ljubljana is both the capital and the transport hub, with the main bus station (Avtobusna postaja Ljubljana, Trg OF 4) and the main railway station (Zelezniska postaja Ljubljana, Trg osvobodilne fronte 6) side by side. LPP city buses cover Ljubljana and its suburbs, trains and Arriva or Alpetour coaches reach Kamnik, Domzale, Vrhnika, Medvode and the Gorenjska towns, and Jozhe Pucnik Airport (LJU) at Brnik is about 26 km north. The old town is pedestrian-only so walking, cycling with BicikeLJ and the free Kavalir electric vehicles are the best ways to see it.

Transport tips
Travel smarter, not harder.
Buy an Urbana card (EUR 2, about USD 2.30, refundable) at a Tourist Information Centre, LPP office or kiosk, load credit and tap it on the validator at the front door; a single bus fare is about EUR 1.30 (about USD 1.50) and valid for 90 minutes including transfers
Check current Urbana, LPP and intercity fares on lpp.si and ap-ljubljana.si before travel; sources differ and tariffs are revised periodically
Use the free Kavalir electric vehicles (kavalir-ljubljana.si) for short hops inside the pedestrian old-town zone; they run on demand and are free of charge
Download the Bolt, LPP (Moj LPP) and Slovenske zeleznice apps before arrival and keep mobile data active; EU roaming applies for EU SIM cards
Buy intercity bus tickets from the driver or at the Ljubljana bus station ticket windows (Trg OF 4) or online at ap-ljubljana.si; train tickets at the Ljubljana station (Trg osvobodilne fronte 6) or on potujemvlaku.si
Rail line sections around Lesce-Bled and Jesenice are under reconstruction until 12 November 2026; trains to Bled end at Lesce-Bled with a replacement bus for the last 4 km, so allow extra time
Drivers need an e-vignette (evinjeta.dars.si or at petrol stations) before entering a motorway; the fine for driving without one starts around EUR 300
Ljubljana's park-and-ride lots (P+R Dolgi most, Barje, Studenec) include a return bus ride into the center for a small flat fee and are cheaper than central garages
