Šmarna gora, a 669 m hill on the northern edge of Ljubljana in central Slovenia, is the city's favourite sunrise and exercise summit, and its top offers a wide panorama in all directions. To the north the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Karavanke rise in layered ridges, to the east the Ljubljana basin spreads toward Kamnik, and to the south the city and the Barje marshes lie below.

The 669 m summit is the city's favourite sunrise spot: layers of Alps to the north, the Ljubljana basin and Barje to the south.

The summit has a pilgrimage church, a small chapel and a mountain hut with a terrace, which provide foreground interest for compositions. Sunrise is the signature moment: the hill is an easy climb in the dark with a head torch, and winter and autumn mornings often bring temperature inversions with fog filling the basin while the summit stands above the cloud. Clear winter evenings produce pink light on the Alps and city lights after dusk. Spring and early autumn give clear air and comfortable climbs, while summer haze is common. The hill is very popular, especially on weekends and at sunrise, and the best tripod positions near the church wall and the terrace can fill up early, so arriving 45 minutes before first light helps. Tripods are allowed but should not block the paths. There is no entry fee, though the hut sells drinks and food, and toilets and water are available there when it is open. Drones are subject to Slovenian rules and should not be flown over crowds. The shortest routes take about 45 minutes to an hour on foot from the trailheads at Šmartno or Gamelje.
