Ljubljana's Central Market (Centralna tržnica) combines an open-air produce market on Vodnikov trg with the covered Plečnik Colonnade along the river, built between 1940 and 1944. Stalls sell seasonal fruit, honey, mushrooms and flowers, and morning light is soft inside the colonnade. The best frames are of the stalls with the cathedral behind, and of the arches over the river. Handheld work with a 35mm or 50mm lens is best because aisles are narrow. Ask vendors before taking close portraits. Stalls thin out by early afternoon and are closed on Sundays. Access is free.
