Ljubljana Castle stands on a 376 m hill above the Old Town and has dominated the city skyline since the 12th century, when a medieval fortress replaced earlier timber defences. The current castle was largely built in the 15th century under the Habsburg Emperor Frederick III and rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1511, when much of the Carniolan capital was damaged. Over the centuries it was used as a seat of the provincial governor, a military hospital and barracks, and, from 1814 until 1905, as a prison. A major restoration since the 1960s has reopened courtyards, the Chapel of St George with its 1489 Gothic wall paintings, the Pentagonal Tower and the 1848 Viewing Tower, which gives a 360 degree view over the city, the Ljubljana basin and, on clear days, the Julian Alps. Exhibits include the Virtual Castle and a history of Ljubljana. The funicular, opened in 2006, links the castle to Krekov trg in a minute, and walking paths climb from Stari trg, Gornji trg and Ribji trg. The courtyard is free, while the museum areas have separate tickets.
