Piran is a Venetian-style town on a narrow peninsula on the Adriatic, about 125 km south-west of Ljubljana, and Slovenia's best-known coastal destination. Buses from the Ljubljana bus station take about 2h15m to 2h45m for roughly EUR 12-16 each way, and driving takes about 1h30m via the A1, but cars are not allowed into the old town. Tartini Square, named after the violinist Giuseppe Tartini, is the heart of the town, with the Venetian House and the Tartini monument. Above it, St George's Church and its bell tower give views over the roofs and the sea, and a stretch of the medieval walls can be walked. The harbour promenade, Punta lighthouse and the narrow lanes make an easy wander. Seafood restaurants line the waterfront, serving sea bass, calamari and fresh fish. The Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, with its salt pans, is a short drive away. Summer is busy with day-trippers; spring and autumn are calmer. In winter, many seaside terraces close but the town remains pleasant to walk.
