Sticna Cistercian Abbey, at Sticna 17 in the municipality of Ivancna Gorica, Central Slovenia, is the oldest and best-preserved monastery in Slovenia. It was founded in 1136 by Patriarch Peregrin I of Aquileia, with monks arriving from Rein Abbey in Austria, and it became a centre of religion, education and agriculture for the Carniolan lands. In the 15th century, with Ottoman raids threatening the region, the abbey was surrounded by walls and towers that still define its fortified character.

The church, a Romanesque basilica of the 12th century with later Gothic and Baroque additions, remains the heart of the complex; its cross-vaulted nave and sober Cistercian proportions are matched by Baroque altars added in the 17th and 18th centuries. The cloister, partly Romanesque and partly Gothic, with later modifications, surrounds a quiet courtyard. The abbey was dissolved in 1784 under Joseph II, used for other purposes, and re-established by Cistercians only in 1898. During the Second World War it was damaged, and after 1945 the monastery's property was nationalised. Restoration took place in the late 20th century, and the Slovenian Museum of Christianity (Slovenski muzej krscanstva) opened in the abbey in 1990s as a thematic museum on the history of Christianity in Slovenia, presenting sacred art, liturgical items, manuscripts, and the abbey's own history. The abbey also has a Baroque garden, a vegetable plot and a monastery workshop producing herbal goods. The site remains an active monastery where monks pray in the church, and visitors move through the church, cloister and museum in a respectful atmosphere. The Cistercian way of life, based on prayer, manual work and farming, is reflected in the abbey's agricultural buildings and gardens, and the community continues to run workshops on site. A visit offers a view of medieval monastic planning that has few equivalents in Slovenia, and the surrounding countryside of Dolenjska adds to the sense of seclusion.
