Ljubljana Marshes Landscape Park (Krajinski park Ljubljansko barje) covers a broad, flat peat plain south of Ljubljana in central Slovenia, around the villages of Ig and Brezovica. The area is known for the prehistoric pile dwellings built on the former lake shore and listed by UNESCO as part of the Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps. Among the finds from the Barje is one of the world's oldest wooden wheels, dated to roughly 3150 BC, which is now displayed at the City Museum of Ljubljana rather than on site. On the ground, visitors find a patchwork of wet meadows, drainage canals, hedgerows and small farms, with the hills of Krim and Gradisce rising at the edges. Signposted routes around Ig suit cycling and walking, and the flat terrain makes it easy even for casual riders. The marshes are a significant area for birds, with waders, herons, lapwings and migrating species, and April to May is a good period for spring migration. Many visitors combine a cycle ride along the canals with a stop at a village inn. A typical outing lasts two to four hours. The landscape is open access with no fixed hours or admission fee, and there are few facilities, so water and snacks should be brought. Late spring to early autumn is the most comfortable season, while winter can bring fog and mud. Crowds are rarely a problem, and weekdays are almost empty. The park is reached by city bus to Ig, about 30 minutes, and bicycles can be hired in Ljubljana. Binoculars and a basic map from the park authority or tourist office improve the visit.
