Kamnik is a compact medieval town at the foot of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps in Central Slovenia, about 25 kilometres north of Ljubljana. The old town is built around Glavni trg, the main square, and the narrow Sutna lane, lined with burgher houses, small shops and cafes. A Franciscan monastery with a library and cloister sits in the centre, and the Church of the Annunciation and other historic buildings add to the setting. Above the town stands Mali Grad (Little Castle), a ruin reached by a short climb from Samostanska ulica. Its Romanesque two-storey chapel of St Eligius, dating from the 12th century, contains frescoes and is the main feature open to visitors in summer. The hilltop grounds are free and offer broad views over red roofs and the Alpine ridge, which makes them the best viewpoint and photo spot in town. Visitors can combine the castle hill with a stroll along the Kamniška Bistrica river and the wooded paths nearby. A typical visit takes two to three hours, longer with a lunch stop. The town is quietest on spring and autumn weekdays, while summer weekends and the Kamnik festival days bring more locals. In winter the castle chapel is closed, but the old town and grounds remain accessible around the clock. Trains from Ljubljana reach Kamnik Mesto in about 45 minutes, and the old town is a ten-minute walk from the stations. Kamnik is also a gateway to Velika Planina and the Kamniška Bistrica valley for those continuing into the mountains.
