Lompoul Desert Camp

Lompoul Desert is an isolated field of inland sand dunes roughly 180 km north of Dakar, situated approximately 30 km from the Atlantic coast near the fishing village of Lompoul-sur-Mer in the Louga Region. The dunes rise to heights unusual for Senegal — the tallest exceeding 100 metres — and occupy a sheltered geographic depression bounded on all sides by baobab-studded Sahel scrubland. Lompoul is Senegal's only significant inland desert landscape accessible by paved and then piste road within a day's drive of the capital, and it functions as a genuinely surprising geographical anomaly in a predominantly flat, agricultural landscape.

Lompoul Desert Camp accommodates guests in traditional large-format Mauritanian-style tents: spacious canvas structures furnished with woven rugs, cushioned low platforms for sleeping, and lantern lighting. No mains electricity reaches the tent interiors, which eliminates phone charging within the sleeping area (a charging point exists at the main camp facility area) and delivers genuine darkness after the campfire dies — a practical advantage for stargazing. Light pollution near Lompoul is minimal, and on clear dry-season nights the Milky Way is visible with considerable detail. The approach to the tent area involves a 20–30 minute traverse across open sand by camel or quad-bike from the vehicle drop point, making the arrival itself part of the experience.

Meals are communal and, in the standard overnight package, fully included. Dinner is served around a central campfire: Senegalese rice and slow-cooked meat dishes prepared by camp staff, followed by a traditional Senegalese attaya tea ceremony. Breakfast is served the following morning before the day heats, allowing a sunrise camel trek across the dune crests when the light and temperature are at their most pleasant. Day visitors who arrive by vehicle for an afternoon-only experience can access the dunes for a reduced fee, but the overnight format — sunset camel ride, campfire dinner, full desert night, and morning trek — is the package that defines the camp's reputation.

The camp requires reasonable physical mobility: soft-sand walking to reach tent positions and the camel-trek component demand basic fitness. The site is not accessible for wheelchair users or guests with significant mobility limitations. The optimal visiting period is November through April; July and August temperatures can exceed 45°C with Harmattan dust winds making conditions uncomfortable for most visitors.
