Climate Overview

Rwanda enjoys a temperate highland climate year-round due to its equatorial location at 1,500-2,500m elevation. Temperatures in Kigali average 19-27°C (66-80°F) with minimal seasonal variation — Rwanda is often called 'the land of eternal spring.' The country has two rainy seasons (March-May and October-November) and two dry seasons (June-September and December-February) that dictate when national parks and outdoor activities are best accessed.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

Long rainy season with lush green landscapes, waterfalls at peak flow, and good birding. Gorilla trekking continues but trails are muddy. Fewer tourists mean lower accommodation prices.

Tips: Pack waterproofs and gaiters for muddy trails. Book gorilla permits in advance despite lower crowd numbers.

☀️ Summer

Jun-Aug

Main dry season — Rwanda's peak travel season. Clear skies, excellent wildlife viewing, gorilla trekking at its best, and comfortable temperatures. Busy with international visitors for Kwita Izina gorilla naming in August.

Tips: Book accommodation and gorilla permits 6-12 months ahead. Bring layers for cold volcano summits.

🍂 Fall

Sep-Nov

September remains dry and excellent. October-November brings the short rains. Good for birding as migratory species arrive. Lake Kivu is calm and beautiful for water activities.

Tips: September is one of the best months — dry season prices but shoulder season crowds. Pack rain gear for October-November.

❄️ Winter

Dec-Feb

Short dry season offers excellent, often overlooked travel. Clear skies, fewer tourists than June-August, and great wildlife viewing in all parks. Christmas period sees some domestic tourism at Lake Kivu.
