Bisate Lodge stands on the forested edge of Volcanoes National Park in the Musanze district of northwestern Rwanda, directly adjacent to the sector where habituated mountain gorilla families range and trek. The lodge sits at an altitude of roughly 2,500 metres on the slopes of an ancient eroded volcanic cone — the bisate of its name — which frames the six forest villas in a natural amphitheater overlooking five of the eight Virunga volcanoes: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. The approach road passes through Musanze town before climbing through tea farms and dense Hagenia-Hypericum forest.
Designed by Nicholas Plewman Architects in collaboration with Wilderness Safaris, the property opened in 2017 and set an immediate benchmark for luxury conservation lodges in East Africa. The six villas take their form from the traditional Rwandan royal residence — the imvubu — updated in contemporary materials: rough-hewn local stone bases rising to conical thatched roofs, floor-to-ceiling volcanic stone fireplaces, and interior walls finished with hand-applied earth plasters. Each villa is completely private, positioned to maximize volcano views from the veranda and the deep soaking tub.
Each villa has a personal butler who handles everything from morning coffee timing to organizing post-trek clothes care — trekking clothes return from the forest significantly muddy. Interiors feature custom-woven Rwandan textiles, locally carved wooden furniture, and a curated library of books on Rwandan history and East African ecology. Rainfall showers and fireplaces address the high-altitude cool; under-floor heating is fitted for colder nights.
Dining at Bisate is communal and celebratory — guests gather in the main lodge for meals prepared by a kitchen sourcing from the lodge's own kitchen garden and Rwandan producers. The lodge runs a community reforestation program planting endemic trees on the surrounding slopes; guests can participate in morning planting sessions alongside local rangers.
All rates are fully inclusive of gorilla trekking permits (currently $1,500 per person per trek), three daily meals, all beverages, guided forest walks, community visits, and transfers from Kigali or Musanze. Bookings are made exclusively through Wilderness Safaris.
