Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Saint Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg is Russia's second-largest city and its cultural capital, built on 42 islands at the mouth of the Neva River. Founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703, it served as the imperial capital for over two centuries and is home to some of the world's greatest museums, palaces, and architectural masterpieces.

Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

November–February

Harsh winters with temperatures regularly below -10°C, very short daylight hours (as few as 6 hours of daylight in December), and dreary grey skies make this the least pleasant time to visit.

Climate Overview

Saint Petersburg has a humid continental climate with mild summers and long, cold winters. The city sits at latitude 59°N — farther north than Moscow — giving it extreme daylight variation: nearly 19 hours of daylight in June (the famous White Nights) versus barely 6 hours in December. Winters are cold with regular snow, while summers are warm and occasionally humid.
