Moscow is the capital and largest city of Russia, a sprawling metropolis of roughly 13.1 million people on the Moskva River. It combines the medieval Kremlin and Red Square, Soviet-era monuments and Stalinist skyscrapers, world-class ballet and museums, and one of the deepest and most ornate metro systems in the world.
Moscow's nightlife ranges from evening ballet and opera at the Bolshoi to late-night jazz, rooftop cocktail bars, and electronic clubs that run until morning. The scene concentrates in Kitay-gorod, along the Moskva river near Krasny Oktyabr, around Patriarch's Ponds and Tverskaya, and on Bolotnaya Embankment. Clubs begin filling after 23:00 and stay open until 06:00 or later on weekends; bars and restaurants often stay open until 02:00 to 06:00. Foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard cards do not work in Russia, so visitors carry RUB cash for covers and drinks.
