Moscow Family Travel Guide 2025
Everything families need to know for a successful trip to Moscow with kids.
Moscow is Russia's sprawling capital and largest city, a global metropolis blending centuries of history with modern dynamism. Home to iconic landmarks like the Kremlin and Red Square, Moscow offers world-class museums, vibrant nightlife, and a rich cultural scene.
Top Family Activities
The best experiences for families in Moscow.
Moscow State Circus (Bolshoy Moskovsky Tsirk)
Russia's premier circus is world-famous for its extraordinary acrobats, clowns, juggling, and trained animals. Housed in a permanent venue on Vernadskogo Prospekt, the Moscow Circus maintains Soviet-era traditions of excellence in performance. One of the world's finest circuses and genuinely unmissable for families.
Moscow Puppet Theatre (Teatr Kukol Obraztsova)
Russia's premier puppet theater founded in 1931, named for maestro Sergei Obraztsov. Elaborate productions of fairy tales and children's stories using marionettes, rod puppets, and hand puppets of extraordinary artistry. Magical for young children even without Russian language understanding.
Gorky Park Activities
Moscow's iconic park offers bicycle hire, paddleboats on the pond, outdoor cinema, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, playgrounds, ping-pong tables, workout areas, and summer beach volleyball. In winter a large outdoor ice rink opens. Genuinely one of Moscow's great family spaces.
Moscow Planetarium
One of the world's largest planetariums with multiple daily shows about astronomy and space. Russia's space heritage makes this particularly meaningful - the planetarium trained many Soviet cosmonauts. The large dome projection system and interactive exhibits captivate children.
VDNKH Exhibition Center and Cosmonautics Museum
Vast Soviet-era exhibition complex with grandiose Stalinist pavilions, the extraordinary Cosmonautics Museum with actual spacecraft and Yuri Gagarin exhibits, Moskvarium aquarium with dolphin shows, a large outdoor ice rink in winter, and fountains in summer. An overwhelming and wonderful family destination.
Kolomenskoye Estate
Historic UNESCO-listed riverside estate with medieval churches, wooden architecture from across Russia, and open riverside grounds where children can run freely. Beautiful apple orchards in spring, sleigh rides in winter. The Church of the Ascension is architecturally fascinating for older children.
Moscow Zoo
Large zoo covering 21 hectares in the center of Moscow with 6,000+ animals including polar bears, giant pandas (on loan from China), snow leopards, Amur tigers, and African animals. Well-maintained modern enclosures and good viewing facilities. Very accessible from central Moscow.
Zaryadye Park
Modern park near Red Square with a fascinating floating bridge over the Moscow River, underground museum about Moscow's history, year-round ice cave with ice sculptures, four micro-climate zones, and interactive elements. Free entry, close to Kremlin, excellent for families.
