Herastrau Park, officially renamed King Michael I Park, is the largest park in northern Bucharest, spread around Lake Herastrau in Sector 1 and reached from Soseaua Nordului and Soseaua Kiseleff. The park was laid out in the 1930s on marshy land beside the Colentina River and today has a long lakeside promenade, tree-lined alleys, rose gardens, sculpture and themed gardens including a Japanese garden.

Visitors can walk or cycle the shoreline, rent rowing boats and pedal boats, take a lake cruise, or settle at a terrace cafe overlooking the water. The Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum occupies a large section on the western shore, and an open-air arena and playgrounds draw families. A full loop of the lake can take more than two hours on foot, so many visitors pick a section and stay for one to three hours. The best photo angles are from the footbridges and the lakeside piers at sunset, when the water reflects the sky and the skyline of the northern business district. Crowds peak on weekend afternoons from May to September, when joggers, cyclists and families fill the paths. Weekday mornings are calm and ideal for walking or running. Entry is free and the park is open from dawn to late evening, with events and concerts in summer. It connects naturally to the Arcul de Triumf to the south, so a typical outing in Bucharest, Romania, combines the arch, the park and the village museum. Midday heat in July and August can be intense, and shaded benches are plentiful along the water.
