Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art is housed in a converted school building in Education City, on the western edge of Doha, Qatar. It is dedicated to modern and contemporary Arab art, drawing on a collection of thousands of works spanning painters, sculptors, photographers and installation artists from across the Arab world and its diaspora. The converted industrial-style interior is organised around bright, flexible galleries and a central atrium, and the building also contains a library, a studio and a courtyard used for events. Rotating exhibitions mean that the display changes several times a year, with solo shows, thematic exhibitions and collection displays. Visitors see works that trace modern movements in places such as Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine and North Africa, as well as the Gulf. A typical visit lasts one and a half to two hours. Admission is about QAR 50 for non-residents, QAR 25 for students, and free for residents with ID and children aged 16 and under. Hours are Saturday to Wednesday from 09:00 to 19:00 (Monday closed), Thursday from 09:00 to 21:00 and Friday from 13:30 to 19:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing; booking online in advance is advised. The museum is quietest on weekday mornings and busiest during Thursday evenings and special openings. Photo opportunities include the atrium and the courtyard, although photography inside galleries may be restricted for certain exhibitions. Access is by Metro Green Line to Education City station followed by a short taxi ride, or a Karwa taxi or ride-hailing trip from Souq Waqif costing about QAR 40-50. The Education City campus also houses other cultural and academic landmarks, which can be combined into a single outing in the cooler months.
