1872 River House

1872 River House occupies a restored 19th-century townhouse on Rua do Infante D. Henrique in the Miragaia district, a quiet residential pocket wedged between the Ribeira waterfront and the Cais das Pedras riverside promenade. The Dom Luís I Bridge and the medieval Ribeira quarter are a short walk east, and São Bento train station is roughly ten minutes on foot, putting the historic centre, Rua das Flores and the Douro ferry docks within easy reach on foot. The property retains its original stone facade and high ceilings while the interior has been updated with a restrained, contemporary palette that lets the building's age show through in exposed beams and traditional tile-inspired details. Accommodation is split between compact Double Rooms and larger Deluxe River View Rooms, several of which look directly over the Douro toward Vila Nova de Gaia and the port wine lodges. A rooftop terrace serves as the main social space, used for breakfast in warmer months and for evening views of the river and the bridge lit up after dark. Breakfast is included and served daily, though there is no in-house restaurant beyond this, so guests typically walk into Ribeira or Miragaia for lunch and dinner at the many tascas and riverside restaurants nearby. There is no spa, pool or gym on site. Service is personal and small-scale, characteristic of an independently run guesthouse rather than a large hotel, with staff able to give directions and recommendations for the surrounding riverside neighbourhood.
