WOW — World of Wine

WOW — World of Wine is a museum and cultural complex that opened in 2020 in a cluster of converted 18th- and 19th-century Port wine warehouses (armazéns) along the Vila Nova de Gaia riverfront, the historic district where Port wine was aged and stored before shipment down the Douro. The complex groups seven separate themed museums under one site, including the Wine Experience, which traces the history of winemaking from antiquity to the present, and the Chocolate Story, Planet Cork, and Pink Palace museums, alongside restaurants and shops housed in the same former cellar buildings. The Wine Experience museum is the most historically focused of the group, using immersive multimedia displays, reconstructed cellar scenes, and historical objects to present the development of the Port wine trade, the role of British and Portuguese shipping houses in Vila Nova de Gaia from the 18th century onward, and the demarcation of the Douro wine region in 1756, one of the world's earliest appellation systems. Presentation is thematic and largely non-chronological within each museum, relying on interactive stations and short films rather than dense object labeling, a curatorial approach distinct from the traditional glass-case museums elsewhere in Porto. The complex retains the original warehouse structures' exposed timber roof trusses and granite walls, adapted with new interior partitions rather than full reconstruction, preserving the buildings' original function as wine-aging cellars visible in several exhibition spaces.
