Solar de Mateus

Solar de Mateus, near Vila Real in the Douro region, was built in stages during the first half of the 18th century for the Mateus branch of the Albuquerque family, with the main facade and monumental double staircase completed around 1745. Its ornate granite scrollwork, pinnacles, and symmetrical wings are widely attributed in part to the Italian-trained architect Nicolau Nasoni, who worked extensively in Porto during the same period, though the extent of his direct involvement remains debated among architectural historians. The house is best known internationally as the image on the label of Mateus Rosé wine, though the estate is a private residence, not the wine's production site, and it continues to be inhabited by descendants of the original family under the management of the Fundação da Casa de Mateus. Interior rooms open to visitors include a library with rare 18th-century volumes, a dining room with painted ceiling panels, and family portraits and religious paintings displayed largely as they have hung for generations rather than in a curated museum sequence. Guided tours move through the ground-floor reception rooms before continuing into the formal gardens, where clipped cedar tunnels, a cypress-lined reflecting pool, and a working chapel extend the Baroque symmetry of the house into the landscape. The estate has been maintained continuously by the family since construction, with restoration work focused on the garden's boxwood parterres and the house's granite ornamentation rather than any change to the original 18th-century layout.
