Vila do Conde & Póvoa de Varzim

Vila do Conde and neighbouring Póvoa de Varzim sit about 30 km north of Porto and are the easiest coastal day trip from the city, reached in about 45 minutes on Metro Line B for €2.30 (~$2.67) (Andante fare) direct to the Vila do Conde or Póvoa stations, or 30 minutes by car via the A28. Afternoon can be spent walking or taking a short bus north to Póvoa de Varzim's beachfront for a swim in summer or a coastal walk in cooler months, with the Póvoa fish market worth a stop for a sense of the working harbour. Restaurants along Vila do Conde's Rua do Lidador and Póvoa's beachfront serve grilled sardines and other fresh Atlantic seafood at moderate prices compared to central Porto. The trip works year-round on Metro Line B's frequent service; summer suits the beach at Póvoa de Varzim, while autumn brings the region's local produce and craft markets.
