Altis Belém Hotel & Spa sits on the Tagus waterfront in the historic Belém district, seven kilometres west of central Lisbon. Altis Belém Hotel & Spa sits on the Tagus waterfront in the historic Belém district, seven kilometres west of central Lisbon. The property opened in 2009 as a purpose-built contemporary hotel — a deliberate architectural contrast to the neighbourhood's Manueline and Baroque monuments — with a low-rise white facade that echoes the limestone tones of the nearby Monument to the Discoveries. Tram 15E from Praça do Comércio runs to Belém in roughly 25 minutes; Belém railway station is a five-minute walk from the hotel entrance.

All 45 rooms and suites face the Tagus, with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame unobstructed river views and, on clear days, the distant Cascais coast. Superior Rooms are the entry-level category; the top-floor suites add wrap-around terraces and separate sitting rooms. Décor uses a palette of ivory, stone, and maritime blue, with Portuguese artisanal textiles throughout the soft furnishings.

Restaurant Feitoria holds one Michelin star and is regarded as one of Lisbon's foremost fine-dining addresses. Chef João Rodrigues's tasting menu focuses on Portuguese terroir, seasonal produce, and traditional techniques reinterpreted with precision and restraint. The restaurant draws substantial non-guest bookings and advance reservations are strongly recommended.

The Spa Belém offers a full treatment menu, indoor heated pool, and thermal circuit. A gym and an outdoor terrace bar complete the leisure offering. Service is formal without being stiff; the hotel is popular with senior leisure travellers and gastronomy-focused visitors who use Belém's density of world-class attractions — the Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, the Berardo Collection Museum — as a base.

Tips for visiting

  • Book Restaurant Feitoria well in advance — it fills weeks ahead even mid-week and is popular with Lisbon diners as well as hotel guests
  • The tram 15E from Praça do Comércio is the most atmospheric way to arrive; taxis and rideshare are faster but miss the riverside scenery
  • Request a higher-floor suite for the widest river panoramas; even Superior Rooms have good views but the elevated suites add terrace space
  • Combine a hotel stay with the Jerónimos Monastery (10 minutes' walk) in the early morning before coach tours arrive — the cloister is at its most tranquil before 10 am
