Palácio Belmonte

Palácio Belmonte is a 15th-century palace built directly into the Moorish and Roman fortifications of São Jorge Castle in Alfama, one of the highest points in old Lisbon, reached via narrow stepped lanes a few minutes from the castle entrance and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol. Its history stretches back through Roman, Moorish, and Portuguese noble occupation, and the property is protected as a national monument, with hand-painted 17th-century azulejo tile panels, frescoed ceilings, and stone archways preserved throughout. Accommodation is limited to a small number of suites and tower suites, each individually designed with antique furnishings, high ceilings, and views over the Tagus river or the city's terracotta rooftops.
