Hotel Memmo Alfama

Hotel Memmo Alfama occupies a contemporary building inserted into the medieval fabric of Alfama at Travessa das Merceeiras 27, a stepped alley connecting the lower Mouraria to the hillside beneath Castelo de São Jorge. The Castelo is a seven-minute walk uphill; the Sé Cathedral is five minutes on foot; Alfama's fado houses cluster within a ten-minute radius. Tram 28 stops two minutes from the entrance, running the full arc of Alfama to Chiado. The hotel's elevation and southwest orientation place it above the Baixa roofline with unobstructed views of the Tagus estuary and the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge.

The building was designed by Spaceworkers Arquitectos and completed in 2015 as a deliberate contemporary intervention in the historic neighbourhood. Exposed concrete, dark steel, and floor-to-ceiling glazing frame the cityscape as a composed visual element rather than incidental backdrop. Forty-two rooms distribute across standard, superior, deluxe-with-view, and suite configurations. All rooms use a restrained palette of stone, linen, and black metal; upper-category rooms and the suite incorporate private terraces with Tagus views.

The rooftop heated pool is the hotel's defining feature: small in scale, it sits at elevation with panoramic Alfama views in every direction and is reserved exclusively for hotel guests. A rooftop bar operates adjacent to the pool from late morning through early evening, serving cocktails and light snacks. Spa treatments are available on request from a menu of massage and skin therapies. A continental breakfast is served each morning. No full-service restaurant operates in-house, though Alfama's dense offering of traditional tasca restaurants — including several widely recommended fado dining houses — begins at the foot of the alley.
