Setúbal and Arrábida Natural Park

Setúbal and the neighbouring Arrábida Natural Park lie about 50km south of Lisbon, best reached by car via the A2/A12 motorway in about an hour, since public transport does not conveniently reach the Arrábida coastline. The Fertagus train from Lisboa Oriente reaches Setúbal city itself in around 1h15 for €4-6, but travellers relying on transit will need a taxi or rental car to continue into the park. Setúbal is a working fishing port known for its Museu do Trabalho and fresh seafood, particularly grilled choco frito and local oysters, while the Arrábida Natural Park to its west protects a range of forested limestone hills that drop steeply to some of Portugal's clearest turquoise water, including Praia de Galapinhos and Praia da Figueirinha. A typical day starts with a drive along the scenic Estrada de Escarpa corniche road through the park, stopping at viewpoints over the coast, followed by beach time at one of the park's coves in late morning before the sun is highest. Afternoons can include a stop at the 16th-century Convento da Arrábida or a visit to a local winery, since the Setúbal Peninsula is known for its moscatel dessert wine. Lunch in Setúbal's fish market area or a beachside kiosk in the park rounds out the day before the return drive. The park's beaches get busy quickly once parking fills, so arriving before mid-morning in summer is important. May through September suits beach visits, when the water is warm enough for swimming, while March through May offers cooler temperatures better suited to the hiking trails through the cork oak and pine forest above the cliffs.
