Quinta da Regaleira is a romantic neo-Manueline palace and estate on the outskirts of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage town 28 kilometres northwest of Lisbon and one of the most popular day trips from the Portuguese capital. Built between 1904 and 1910 for António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro — a Brazilian-born millionaire, collector, and Freemason — the estate is saturated with esoteric symbolism drawn from Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, alchemy, and Rosicrucianism.

The palace itself is a confection of towers, balconies, and elaborate Manueline stone carvings set against a backdrop of dense subtropical garden. The grounds are the primary attraction: a network of paths winds through the romantically overgrown terrain past grottos, fountains, a lake, a ruined chapel, and several tunnels. The most celebrated feature is the Initiation Well (Poço Iniciático) — an inverted tower descending nine mossy landings below ground, lit from above through a circular opening and connected to a subterranean tunnel system. Visitors descend spiral staircases to the bottom of the well and exit through the tunnels, emerging at different points in the garden. A thorough exploration of the estate takes 2–3 hours. Sintra itself is extremely popular in summer; Quinta da Regaleira is among the most visited sites in the town. Arriving on the first morning train from Rossio (around 07:30 on weekdays) and going directly to the Quinta gives approximately 90 minutes before the main crowds arrive from Lisbon.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes — the garden paths are steep, uneven, and sometimes muddy
