Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square)

Praça do Comércio is Lisbon's grand riverfront square, occupying the site where the Royal Palace stood before it was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. Rebuilt under the Marquis of Pombal as part of the systematic reconstruction of Baixa, it is one of the largest and most architecturally unified public squares in Europe, enclosed on three sides by identical yellow arcaded government buildings and open on the south directly to the Tagus River. At the centre stands an equestrian bronze statue of King Dom José I, cast in 1775 by Joaquim Machado de Castro. The square's dominant architectural feature is the Arco da Rua Augusta at its northern end — a triumphal arch that frames the axis leading up Rua Augusta through the Baixa to Rossio Square. Along the riverside edge, stone steps descend directly to the water where ferries to Cacilhas on the south bank depart; this landing was historically where travellers and goods arrived in the Portuguese capital. The arcades surrounding three sides of the square shelter restaurants, a wine bar (Lisbon Story Centre), and the Museu Lisboa on the western corner. Sunset at Praça do Comércio is exceptional: the low light catches the triumphal arch and the ochre facades in amber while the Tagus shimmers silver and pink to the west. The square is entirely pedestrianised from the riverfront to the arch. Outdoor café seating fills the centre during warmer months.
