Surfing at Costa da Caparica

Costa da Caparica is a long Atlantic-facing beach roughly 15km south of Lisbon across the Tagus estuary, known locally as a reliable beginner-to-intermediate surf spot with sandbar breaks that shift along several kilometres of coastline. Lessons run through established local schools such as Costa da Caparica Surf School and Caparica Surf Camp, both staffed by instructors certified through the Portuguese Surfing Federation, and groups are typically kept small for close supervision in the water. No prior experience is required for beginner lessons, though a reasonable level of swimming ability and fitness for paddling is expected; children are usually accepted from around age 8 with parental consent. Lesson packages include board and wetsuit rental, so newcomers only need to bring swimwear, a towel, and sun protection; those already comfortable in the water can rent equipment separately by the day for independent sessions. Every lesson opens with a land-based safety briefing covering rip current awareness, hand signals, and beach flag warnings, and instructors remain in the water alongside students throughout. Lifeguards patrol the main beach sections in summer, and schools carry basic water-rescue training as standard. The most consistent, well-shaped waves arrive between September and April when Atlantic swells are stronger and crowds thinner, while June through August brings warmer water, smaller surf, and a livelier beach scene geared toward casual learners. Conditions can turn choppy and wind-blown on afternoons with strong thermal winds, so morning sessions are generally preferred, and red-flag days with dangerous rip currents should be avoided entirely.
