The Serra da Arrábida Coastal Walk traverses the limestone ridge of Arrábida Natural Park (Parque Natural da Arrábida) along the Setúbal Peninsula, approximately 40 kilometres south of Lisbon. The route crosses the crest of the Arrábida mountain range, reaching elevations of around 500 metres, with panoramic views over the crystal-clear, sheltered waters of the Arrábida Marine Natural Reserve below — widely regarded as having some of the cleanest coastal water in continental Europe.
Trailhead access: The most common starting point is near the Convento da Arrábida, accessible by car from Setúbal via the N10-4 coastal road. Setúbal is reached by train from Lisbon's Fertagus or CP Setubal Line services (approximately 1 hour). From Setúbal, taxis connect to the park. Vehicle access to the coastal road is restricted June through September to a fixed number of vehicles per day; advance reservations are required through the Arrábida park access system. No hiking permit is needed for the ridge trail itself.
Distance and elevation: The walk covers approximately 8 kilometres with an elevation gain of around 400 metres. The ridge drops steeply on the southern sea-facing side; most hikers descend to one of the coves (Portinho da Arrábida or Galapinhos) before returning via the ridge or a lower coastal path.
Surface and exposure: The trail ascends on stony limestone paths with occasional loose scree on steeper sections. The ridge is fully exposed with little shade; the southern slopes facing the sea receive strong summer sun. Some sections involve light scrambling over rock outcrops. Wind can be significant on the exposed crest, particularly in winter and spring.
Landmarks: The Convento da Arrábida, a 16th-century Franciscan monastery embedded in the cliffs, is a prominent landmark on the approach. From the ridge, the Marine Reserve's famously transparent turquoise waters stretch below. Hidden beaches including Galapinhos (frequently listed among Portugal's best beaches) are accessible via steep descent paths from the ridge.
Water and shelter: No water sources exist on the ridge trail. The Portinho da Arrábida beach area has seasonal cafés and toilet facilities. All water should be carried from Setúbal or the park entrance before beginning the ascent.

Accessibility
The Serra da Arrábida ridge walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. The steep limestone paths and rocky ridge require sure footing and good balance throughout. The Portinho da Arrábida beach area has flat paved sections near the seafront that are accessible to visitors with limited mobility who do not wish to walk the ridge trail.
