Poço do Inferno Waterfall

Poço do Inferno (Hell's Well) is a stepped waterfall in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park near Manteigas, framed by a dense forest of pine and native oak that provides natural shade for the falls. The classic frame is a vertical composition from the viewing platform below the main drop, showing the water falling into a rock pool with moss-covered boulders and overhanging branches on either side; a wider frame from the footbridge upstream captures a second, smaller cascade. Because the falls sit inside a narrow, tree-shaded ravine, direct midday sun rarely reaches the water directly -- the canopy filters the light into soft, even illumination that suits long exposures without blowing out the white water, which is why midday, counterintuitively, is the recommended time here rather than golden hour. Overcast days work especially well, removing dappled light patches from the surrounding rock. The best season is autumn through spring, when rainfall keeps flow strong and, in autumn, the surrounding forest turns gold and rust around the falls; by late summer the flow can drop to a trickle after the dry Iberian summer. The site is a popular family excursion from Manteigas, so weekends and Portuguese school holidays bring moderate crowds and a small car park that fills by mid-morning; arriving on a weekday morning gives clearer access to the main viewing platform for a tripod. There is a small parking fee at the site during peak season. Tripods are permitted on the public paths and platforms. Drone flights are discouraged within the forested natural park corridor and require ICNF authorization, and the dense tree cover would obstruct most drone shots regardless.
