Santuário de Fátima (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima)

The Sanctuary of Fátima developed after three shepherd children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary between May and October 1917 in the Cova da Iria fields outside the then-small village of Fátima, an event that drew immediate popular devotion and was formally recognized by the Catholic Church in 1930. The site's small Chapel of the Apparitions, built on the spot of the reported sightings, remains the devotional focal point, while the neoclassical Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, completed in 1953, holds the tombs of two of the three shepherd children, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, who were canonized as saints in 2017. A much larger modern Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, opened in 2007, was built to accommodate the massive crowds that gather for pilgrimage anniversaries, particularly the May 13 and October 13 commemorations of the first and last apparitions. The vast paved esplanade connecting the two basilicas, one of the largest public squares in the world, reflects the scale of pilgrimage traffic the site now receives, with millions of visitors arriving annually from across the globe. Presentation at the sanctuary is devotional rather than curated as a conventional heritage exhibit, centered on liturgy, candlelight processions, and the historical narrative of the 1917 apparitions rather than object-based display.
