Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha (Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha)

The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, founded in the early 14th century on the low bank of the Mondego River in Coimbra, was built for the Poor Clares order with royal patronage connected to Queen Isabel of Aragon, who was buried there in 1336. Repeated flooding from the Mondego progressively buried the Gothic church under river silt from the 17th century onward, forcing the nuns to relocate uphill to the newer Santa Clara-a-Nova monastery in the 1670s and leaving the original building abandoned and submerged for centuries. Archaeological excavation and drainage work carried out mainly between 1995 and 2009 uncovered the Gothic nave, chancel, and surrounding cloister remains, which are now presented at a lowered level within a protective interpretive structure. The site preserves tomb fragments, architectural elements, and the footprint of the original church plan, with a visitor center explaining the excavation and the flooding history through models and multimedia displays. Presentation is organized chronologically, from the monastery's founding and royal associations through its slow burial by river sediment to its 20th-century rediscovery, making the site as much a story of archaeological recovery as of medieval monastic life.
