Viseu and the Dao Wine Region

Viseu, 90 km northeast of Coimbra, is reached in about 1 hour by car via the A14/IP3 or roughly 1.5 hours on a direct Rede Expressos coach, with a rental car or taxi useful for onward travel into the surrounding Dao wine region. The historic center of Viseu is anchored by the Se Cathedral and the adjacent Grao Vasco Museum, which houses works by the 16th-century Portuguese master painter Vasco Fernandes, alongside the granite-paved streets of the old town lined with shops and cafes around Praca da Republica (Rossio). The Dao region surrounding Viseu is one of Portugal's premier wine-producing areas, known for structured red wines from Touriga Nacional grapes grown on granite-rich soils at relatively high altitude. A typical day combines a morning in Viseu's old town and cathedral quarter with an afternoon visiting one or two Dao wineries for a tasting and cellar tour, many of which require advance booking. Restaurants in Viseu serve regional dishes such as roasted kid goat and Dao wines by the glass, and the harvest season in September and October brings added activity to the vineyards, including grape-picking demonstrations at some estates. Given the winery driving involved, this trip suits travelers comfortable with a self-drive itinerary or those booking an organized wine-region tour from Coimbra.
