Praia de Mira

Praia de Mira is a long, open-Atlantic sand beach on the Costa de Prata in the Coimbra District of Portugal, fronting the small resort town of Mira. The sand is fine and pale, backed by low dunes and a pine-forest hinterland, and the water carries the greenish, slightly cool tone typical of this stretch of the central Portuguese coast. The beach is broad and largely unbroken for several kilometres, giving it an open, exposed shape rather than a sheltered cove; onshore winds can pick up in the afternoon, which locals and visiting surfers use to their advantage on the beach's northern flank. Swell here can be firm even in summer, so the central, lifeguard-supervised stretch in front of the town is the more family-friendly option, while the flanks see more experienced swimmers and bodyboarders. Praia de Mira draws a mixed crowd: families settle near the boardwalk and cafes, while a smaller surf contingent works the peripheral sandbanks. Amenities are concentrated around the Avenida do Mar seafront, with sun lounger and umbrella rental, several beach bars and cafes serving grilled fish and petiscos, public restrooms, and a lifeguard post staffed through the summer season (Jun-Sep). An accessible boardwalk crosses the dunes to the shore, easing the walk from the parking areas. Parking is plentiful along Avenida do Mar and adjacent streets, though it fills by midday in July and August. There is no direct train service to Mira; visitors typically drive via the N334/IC1 from Coimbra, roughly 45 minutes away, or take a regional bus connection from Coimbra or Cantanhede.
