University of Coimbra – Paço das Escolas (UNESCO)

The Sala dos Capelos, where doctoral ceremonies are still held, retains its original wooden ceiling and rows of portraits of Portuguese monarchs. Crowds build steadily through midday and peak in early afternoon when coach tours arrive from Lisbon and Porto; late afternoon in shoulder season is comparatively calm. Students in black capes crossing the courtyard between lectures are a distinctive sight tied to the university's centuries-old academic traditions, particularly visible during the Queima das Fitas festival in May. The complex sits atop Coimbra's highest hill, so the approach involves a steep climb from the lower town, rewarded by views that stretch across the Mondego valley.
