Almeida Star Fort

Almeida is a striking example of Vauban-style star fort military architecture, its 17th-century twelve-pointed bastioned walls forming a geometric star visible clearly from above and impressive to walk at ground level. Visitors can follow the walkable ramparts around much of the perimeter, descend into the underground casemates and tunnels that once sheltered troops and stored supplies, and explore the small military museum documenting the fortress's role in the Peninsular War, including its 1810 siege and explosion during the Napoleonic campaigns. The fort's double ring of walls and dry moats, designed to withstand artillery bombardment, remain largely intact and give a strong sense of the scale of frontier fortification along the Portugal-Spain border. A visit covering the ramparts, tunnels, and museum takes about one and a half to two hours. Late August brings a historical re-enactment of the Siege of Almeida with costumed events and demonstrations, drawing the largest crowds of the year, while any weekday outside that period offers a quiet, largely uncrowded visit. The clearest view of the star shape itself is from slightly elevated ground just outside the fortress walls.
