Serra da Estrela Ski and Snow-Tubing Resort

The Serra da Estrela ski resort, on the Torre plateau within Serra da Estrela Natural Park, is mainland Portugal's only ski area, offering downhill ski and snowboard slopes up to around 1 km alongside shorter snow-tubing lanes for visitors who prefer not to ski. Ski slopes are graded for a range of abilities, with beginner areas suited to first-timers taking a lesson and steeper sections for more experienced skiers, while snow-tubing requires no prior experience or particular fitness. Skis or a snowboard, boots, and typically helmets are available to rent on-site; visitors should bring their own gloves, goggles, and warm waterproof clothing. The resort is run directly by the Serra da Estrela ski station rather than an independent tour company, and operates its own ski patrol and equipment maintenance rather than relying on third-party guides. Safety briefings are given as part of any lesson booking, and the resort's ski patrol responds to injuries on the slopes; a first-aid post operates on-site during opening hours. Snowfall is unpredictable at this relatively low, southerly latitude for a ski resort, so the season is entirely snow-dependent and runs roughly December to March in years with sufficient natural or machine-made snow; visitors should check current snow conditions before traveling, since the resort can close with little notice if snow cover melts. Weekends and Portuguese school holidays bring the largest crowds and longest lift queues.
