Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is considered the highest and most panoramic viewpoint in Lisbon, sitting at the peak of the Graça hill in the eastern city and offering an unobstructed 180-degree panorama from northwest to southeast. The viewpoint looks directly across the city to São Jorge Castle on its opposing hill, over the red-tiled rooftops of Alfama, and down the Tagus River estuary toward the sea. On clear days the Arrábida mountains on the far bank of the Tagus are visible, as is the Christ the King statue (Cristo Rei) across the river in Almada. The viewpoint takes its name from the small chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte that stands at its edge — a 15th-century chapel with a carved stone throne outside its entrance where tradition holds that pregnant women sat and prayed. The tiled benches that line the viewpoint are characteristic of Lisbon's miradouros — they allow visitors to sit and take in the view at leisure rather than simply passing through. The viewpoint is reached by a short walk from Graça tram stop (line 28) or by walking up from Mouraria neighbourhood below. It is less known to tourists than Miradouro da Graça directly below, and significantly quieter even in high season. Sunrise and sunset are both spectacular from this elevation: at sunrise, the castle is front-lit; at sunset, the Tagus reflects the orange sky.
