Livraria Lello

Livraria Lello at Rua das Carmelitas 144 in Porto is consistently ranked among the most beautiful bookshops in the world. Opened in 1906, the building was designed by Xavier Esteves in an Art Nouveau style with neo-Gothic flourishes. The narrow façade gives little hint of the extraordinary interior: a double-height main hall rising to a painted stained-glass ceiling, framed by sinuous carved wooden galleries and balconies running along the upper level. The centrepiece is the red lacquered spiral staircase, a swooping double helix that curves upward between the two floors — the staircase alone draws dedicated photographers and architecture enthusiasts. The woodwork throughout is intricately carved and original; the ceiling painting above the stained glass bears the motto 'Decus in Labore' (Honour in Work). J.K. Rowling lived in Porto in the early 1990s and has cited Lello as one of the inspirations for the Hogwarts library, though she has never confirmed it directly; the connection has become part of the bookshop's mythology regardless. Despite the fame, Lello remains a functioning bookshop stocking mainly Portuguese-language literature and art books, with some English titles. An entry fee of €6 is charged (deductible from any book purchase), a measure introduced to manage visitor numbers. Inside, the space is small: roughly 30 metres long, 10 metres wide. Visits are typically 30 to 45 minutes. Time slots are timed and limited; booking online in advance is strongly recommended, especially in summer.
