This vast UNESCO World Heritage monastery in Tomar was the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal. The complex showcases architectural styles from Romanesque to Renaissance, with the stunning Manueline Charola window being an iconic masterpiece.
The Convent of Christ (Convento de Cristo) is a fortified monastic complex on a hill above Tomar, in the Ribatejo region of central Portugal. Founded in the 12th century as the seat of the Knights Templar in Portugal, it later passed to the Order of Christ and grew over five centuries into a layered ensemble of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance buildings. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is entered through the Castle of Tomar walls. The main highlight is the Charola, a 12th-century circular Templar rotunda modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, its octagonal core covered in gilded wood and painted decoration. Beside it, the Manueline nave leads to the famous Chapter House Window on the west facade, an elaborate composition of ropes, coral, seaweed, armillary spheres and the cross of the Order of Christ. Visitors then walk through a series of cloisters, including the Cloister of the Washing and the large Renaissance Cloister of João III, along with dormitories, a refectory and kitchens. A visit takes two to three hours. The best views of the window are from the western garden in morning light, while the Charola is best seen when the interior is quiet. Terraces and the Santa Barbara cloister give views over the town. Crowds are heaviest from late morning to mid-afternoon, with bus groups from Lisbon, and weekends and holiday periods. Early morning and late afternoon are quieter. Tickets are sold at the entrance, and a combined ticket with other monuments is available. The site is also close to the Castle of Tomar walls, the Mata dos Sete Montes forest and the old town, so visitors can combine them in a day trip.
