The Se Cathedral of Faro stands on Largo da Se at the heart of the Cidade Velha, in the Algarve region of Portugal, and its bell tower offers one of the best elevated viewpoints in the old town. The climb, which carries a small entry fee, ends at the top of the tower where openings frame the surrounding terracotta rooftops, the cathedral square, the town walls and the Ria Formosa lagoon with its barrier islands beyond.

Two frames are worth planning for. At ground level, the cathedral facade and tower rise above the orange trees of the square, and late afternoon sun lights the stone with a warm tone, making the afternoon the best time for exterior shots. From the tower, the view across the lagoon is best when the sun is behind the shoulder and the water reflects clear sky, typically in the late afternoon in clear weather. The best season is year-round, though spring and autumn offer softer light and clearer air than the hazy height of summer. The square is generally quiet outside tour-group hours, and the tower platform is small, so only a few people can shoot at a time and tripods are impractical there; a handheld wide-angle or standard zoom works best, with a higher shutter speed to keep images sharp in the breeze. Ground-level tripod use in the square is usually tolerated when it does not obstruct pedestrians. The tower and cathedral interior are managed by Portuguese heritage authorities, so opening hours and photography rules can change and should be checked on arrival. Drones are not advisable over the old town because of the airport and controlled airspace nearby. Cafes with outdoor seating line the square and nearby streets, and public restrooms are available in the old town and at the marina. Combining the tower climb with a walk along the walls gives a full set of views of Faro in one afternoon.
