Papua New Guinea Weather & Climate Guide 2026

Papua New Guinea's climate in numbers — the months that flatter it, the ones to avoid, and what to pack.

Papua New Guinea is a land of extraordinary cultural diversity and pristine natural beauty in the Pacific. From the vibrant traditions of over 800 indigenous cultures to world-class diving sites and the legendary Kokoda Track, PNG offers adventurers an unparalleled experience in one of the world's last frontiers.

Papua New Guinea has a tropical climate with temperatures consistently warm year-round, typically 25-33°C in coastal areas and cooler (15-25°C) in the Highlands above 1500m. The country experiences two distinct seasons: a dry season from approximately May to October and a wet season from November to April. Humidity is high throughout the year, often 75-90%, making the dry season significantly more comfortable for outdoor activities and trekking. The extreme rainfall (Kokoda corridor receives up to 4,500mm annually) means wet season travel on trails and to remote areas is substantially more challenging.

The seasons

What to expect in each part of the year.

Season

Dry_season

Months: May-October

PNG's prime travel season with lower humidity, less rain, and more reliable weather for Kokoda trekking, diving, and outdoor activities. The Goroka Show (September) and Mt Hagen Show (August) both fall in this period.

Season

Wet_season

Months: November-April

Heavy rainfall, high humidity, and regular tropical storms make outdoor activities challenging. Kokoda Track becomes dangerously slippery and river crossings hazardous. Diving visibility can be reduced though some marine species are more active.

Season

Shoulder_early

Months: April

Transitional month with decreasing rainfall and improving conditions. Reasonable time to visit with lower crowds than peak season.

Season

Shoulder_late

Months: November

Transitional month with increasing rainfall. The Alotau Canoe and Kundu Festival takes place in November and is worth planning around despite higher rainfall.
