Loloata Island Resort occupies most of a small private island in Bootless Bay, approximately 20 minutes by dedicated boat transfer from Port Moresby's Ela Beach area. The island sits within the Coral Sea, separated from Port Moresby's urban density by a sheltered lagoon. This physical separation from the capital is central to the resort's appeal: within half an hour of leaving the city, guests arrive at a property with clean beaches, coral gardens, and some of the clearest water accessible from Port Moresby.

Accommodation ranges from garden bungalows to beachfront units, all constructed in tropical timber with thatched or corrugated iron roofing that sits sympathetically within the island environment. All units have air conditioning, ceiling fans, private bathrooms, and verandahs facing either the gardens or the water. The resort operates on an all-inclusive basis covering three meals per day, selected beverages, and non-motorized water activities; diving packages require a separate surcharge and are managed by the on-site PADI dive center.

The dive center offers access to World War II wrecks alongside pristine coral reef walls, making it one of the most accessible dive operations from Port Moresby. Non-diving guests have kayaks, snorkeling equipment, and a beach with clear shallows. The main restaurant serves a rotating menu of buffet and à la carte dishes, incorporating fresh seafood daily. Service is personal and attentive given the resort's limited capacity. The surrounding Bootless Bay marine environment is protected and in notably good health relative to many PNG coastal areas, making snorkeling directly from the beach rewarding even for casual observers.

Tips for visiting

  • Arrange the boat transfer in advance — the resort operates scheduled departures and does not always run transfers on demand.
  • All-inclusive packages represent better value for divers who plan multiple dives per day; non-divers should calculate whether the dive surcharge fits their budget.
  • Bring adequate personal medications and sunscreen; the island has no pharmacy and a Port Moresby transfer is nearly an hour round trip.
  • Mobile signal from Digicel PNG is generally available on the island; wi-fi in common areas works but is limited by the satellite connection.

When to visit

April to November (drier months) for best diving visibility and calmer sea conditions
