Vestland is Norway's fjord county, home to Bergen, the Sognefjord, the Hardangerfjord, the Nærøyfjord, Europe's largest mainland glacier and a coastline of islands and surf beaches.
Vestland has a mild, very wet maritime climate shaped by the North Atlantic and the Gulf Stream. Bergen is often called the rainiest big city in Europe, with about 2,250 mm of rain a year and roughly 230 rainy days. Winters on the coast are mild (around 0-5 C) while inland Voss and the mountain passes are much colder with snow from November to April. Summers are mild and bright, with long daylight, but a rain jacket is necessary every month of the year. Figures are approximate long-term Bergen averages.

The seasons
What to expect in each part of the year.
Spring
Months: Mar-May
Cool and damp early on, then the driest, brightest period of the year in May. Hardanger blossoms bloom late April to mid-May and snowmelt makes the waterfalls dramatic. Constitution Day (17 May) in Bergen is a huge parade.
Summer
Months: Jun-Aug
Mild (15-20 C) with very long days; Voss and Flam can hit 25 C on warm days. July is peak tourist season; showers are still frequent.
Fall
Months: Sep-Nov
September offers golden colours but heavy rain begins; October is the wettest month. Storms can cancel ferries and cable cars.
Winter
Months: Dec-Feb
Mild on the coast but dark and wet; inland Voss is cold with reliable snow. The Bergen Christmas market and cosy cafes are the draw.
