Getting Around Vestland 2026

How Vestland moves: the transit systems, intercity routes, and fares that shape your trip.

Vestland is Norway's fjord county, home to Bergen, the Sognefjord, the Hardangerfjord, the Nærøyfjord, Europe's largest mainland glacier and a coastline of islands and surf beaches.

Public
Good in Bergen and along the main fjord corridors: Skyss runs buses and the Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) on one ticket system in the app Skyss Billett, Vy runs the Bergen Line train via Voss to Myrdal and Oslo, and Norled and Fjord1 run fjord ferries and express boats. Outside the Bergen-Voss-Sogndal corridors, services thin out and last departures are early in the evening.
Taxi
Taxis are metered and expensive (a short city ride costs roughly 150-250 NOK, about $16-26); book through Bergen Taxi on 07000 or a ride-hailing app. Outside Bergen, taxis often must be pre-booked.
Rental
A car helps for Hardanger, Sognefjord and the Nordfjord valleys, but Vestland has many toll roads (charged automatically via AutoPASS in rental cars), fjord ferry crossings and narrow mountain roads. It is unnecessary for Bergen itself.
Walking
Central Bergen (Bryggen, Fisketorget, Nordnes, the Fløibanen base station) is compact and walkable but hilly and cobbled; steep stairs and wet weather are the norm. Fjord villages such as Flåm, Balestrand and Eidfjord are walkable once there.

Transportation details

Full breakdown of how to get around.

Vestland (Western Norway) is organised around Bergen, which has the region's main airport, the Bergen Line train and the Skyss network. From Bergen, trains run to Voss and onward to Myrdal for the Flåmsbana, express boats and ferries cross the Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord, and regional buses link Sogndal, Førde and Florø. Most visitors combine rail, boat and bus rather than a car.

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Download the Skyss Billett app before arrival; tickets must be bought before boarding the Bergen Light Rail (no sales on board), and a single ticket from the city centre to the airport costs about 45 NOK (~$4.70).

Tip

The Flybussen airport bus from Bergen Flesland (BGO) to the city costs about 179 NOK (~$18.60) online; the light rail is cheaper at roughly 45 NOK (~$4.70) and takes about 45 minutes.

Tip

Book Vy trains on vy.no or the Vy app at least a few weeks ahead; Lavpris fares from Bergen to Voss start at about 139 NOK (~$14.50) and sell out in summer.

Tip

Check ferry and cruise dates before planning fjord days: the Flåm-Gudvangen cruise runs roughly 20 April to 15 October, and the Bergen-Flåm express boat runs in the warmer months only. Confirm on norled.no and norwaysbest.com.

Tip

Carry a rain jacket for every ferry and open-deck stop; Bergen weather changes quickly, and mountain-pass roads close in winter (check vegvesen.no or phone 175 for road status).

Tip

Use the Entur app (entur.no) to plan multi-operator journeys across Skyss, Vy and Norled in one search.

Tip

The Bergen Card includes free Skyss buses and the light rail and a discount on Flybussen; compare its price with single tickets before buying.

Tip

Last buses on rural fjord routes can leave mid-afternoon; confirm the return departure before travelling out.
