Storfjord Hotel

Storfjord Hotel occupies a hillside position above the Storfjord in Skaset, Sunnmøre, approximately 60 kilometres from Ålesund by road and 40 kilometres from the Geirangerfjord UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hotel opened in 2006 and was designed to integrate contemporary Norwegian vernacular architecture into the landscape — dark-stained timber cladding, sod roofs, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls blend the buildings into the surrounding birch forest and rock face above the water. Twenty-three rooms and suites are arranged across several connected timber structures, all oriented toward the fjord and the snow-streaked peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps. Each room is furnished with custom-made oak pieces, hand-woven textiles, wool throws, and bathrooms lined in Norwegian stone. Several suites include private outdoor terraces with personal hot tubs positioned to face the water and mountains. The restaurant serves a daily-changing set menu of four to five courses, drawing exclusively on Norwegian producers: shellfish from the Hjørundfjord, lamb from local smallholdings, foraged mushrooms and berries from the surrounding hillside, and cured fish from the region's traditional smokeries. The wine list favours natural and biodynamic producers from Scandinavia and continental Europe. A library lounge with an open fireplace anchors the indoor common areas and houses an extensive collection of Scandinavian design and nature books. Communal outdoor hot tubs are available to all guests at any hour. Walking trails of varying difficulty depart directly from the hotel entrance, from easy fjordside paths to demanding ridge routes with views across multiple fjord systems.
