Climate Overview

North Korea has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and dry with temperatures dropping well below freezing in Pyongyang, while summers are hot and humid with a monsoon rainy season from June to August. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for travel with mild temperatures and lower humidity. The northern mountainous regions, including Mount Paektu, experience much harsher conditions year-round.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

Cherry blossoms and mild temperatures make spring the most scenic season. April is peak time for Kim Il-sung's birthday celebrations (April 15). Temperatures warm rapidly from March through May with minimal rain before the summer monsoon.

Tips: Pack layers for cool mornings; April 15 brings festive decorations and events throughout Pyongyang

Jun-Aug

Hot and humid with a monsoon period in July-August bringing heavy rainfall. July and August are the wettest months. The Wonsan coast and beaches are most accessible. Mass Games may be held in August-September during significant anniversary years.

Tips: Light, breathable clothing; pack a compact umbrella; Wonsan beach tours best arranged in July

🍂 Fall

Sep-Nov

The most comfortable season with cool temperatures, lower humidity, and vivid autumn foliage in the mountains. September 9 (DPRK founding anniversary) and October see major state celebrations. Mount Myohyang foliage peaks in October.

Tips: Pack a light jacket; October Mass Games (when held) and autumn mountain colours make this the premium travel season

Dec-Feb

Cold and dry with temperatures regularly dropping to -15°C in Pyongyang. Snowfall transforms the city. Kim Jong-il's birthday (February 16) brings winter ice festivals and celebrations. The Masikryong ski resort operates this season.

Tips: Heavy warm clothing essential; hand warmers recommended for outdoor monument visits; Masikryong skiing available

April 15
Kim Il-sung Birthday (Day of the Sun)

North Korea's most important holiday celebrating the founder's birthday. Mass celebrations, flower displays at monuments, and special performances. Pyongyang is decorated elaborately. Difficult time to get tour spots as locals travel.

September-October (not every year)
Mass Games (Arirang Festival)

Spectacular mass gymnastics and artistic performances at the world's largest stadium. Up to 100,000 performers create living propaganda art. Card section displays create massive images. Book tours well in advance when scheduled.

August 15
National Liberation Day

Celebrates liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945. Military parades, fireworks, and public celebrations. Good time for photography of decorated Pyongyang, but tours book up quickly.

February 16
Kim Jong-il Birthday (Day of the Shining Star)

Major holiday honoring Kim Jong-il with flowers laid at monuments, fireworks, and celebrations. Ice sculpture festivals and winter activities. Very cold but festive atmosphere.

September 9
Founding of the Republic Day

Celebrates the founding of the DPRK in 1948. Military parades, mass rallies in Kim Il-sung Square, and evening fireworks. Major patriotic displays and propaganda.

Usually April
Pyongyang Marathon

Amateur runners can participate in the Pyongyang Marathon, one of the few participatory activities for tourists. Run through city streets with locals. Full marathon, half, 10K, and 5K options. Unique experience but politically complex.

December-January
Winter Ice Festival

Ice sculptures and winter activities in Pyongyang and other cities. Celebrates Kim Jong-il's birthday with frozen art. Very cold but visually impressive.

International Film Festival

Pyongyang International Film Festival showcases films from friendly nations. Rare cultural event where tourists might interact with filmmakers. Heavily political selection.
