Tafawa Balewa Square

Tafawa Balewa Square in Onikan, Lagos Island, is a former racecourse turned national monument grounds, framed by a grandstand and gated entrances topped with eagle sculptures marking Nigerian independence. The wide open grounds and symmetrical grandstand architecture favor a wide-angle approach, capturing the gate's eagle monuments against the sky or the grandstand's repeating column lines from a centered position on the plaza. Early morning between 7:00 and 8:30AM gives soft, low side light on the grandstand facade and near-empty grounds, since the square fills with vendors, event setups, and pedestrian traffic later in the day. The square is used year-round for the site's own architecture, though the week around Nigerian independence in early October brings flag displays and decorative additions that add seasonal color. Weekday mornings are notably quieter than weekends or event days, when the square may host organized functions that restrict general photography access. There is no standard entrance fee to view the square's public grounds and gates, though organized shoots or events elsewhere on the grounds may require prior permission from the relevant authority; tripods are generally fine for personal photography on the open plaza.
